Something about the start of a New Year makes me want to eliminate clutter, reorganize files, and start fresh in my home environment. I am a minimalist by nature, but even I have been in a whirlwind space-clearing mood for the last week or so. I look forward to letting go of possessions I no longer need and getting down to some Winter activities in my cozy home space, with a clearer head and room to welcome anything new I wish to receive.
So what about our yoga mat home space? How do we clear that area to reap benefits in the New Year?
B.K.S. Iyengar says that if you take care in using your props in your practice, that same mindfulness can extend to the benefits you bring to your body and mind. This makes so much sense. Clean your yoga mat. Wash your yoga bag. Perhaps freshen up your practice clothing if they are worn and old. Set up your props neatly around your mat in class. Fold the blankets with care, and keep the space on and off your mat organized.
If you are precise with your mat and props and practice gear, you can be precise with your alignment, breath, and thoughts. Clearing your mat can open your mind! Try it and see how much freedom and space enters your practice on the inside by just attending to the space around you.
