This past August, I decided to get out of New York and take a step back. I needed some time to reflect on the year that had just passed. I was beginning to feel like New York wasn’t really doing it for me. That moment when you need a break from the hustle of the city…well, this was past that moment. I needed real time away to rediscover what it was that I wanted from life and where I was hoping to place my focus.
At the time, I also was in the process of beginning a small business that specializes in pure essential oils. I had been studying with a dear friend of mine, oil guru Nancy Engel, and had finally taken her advice to make my own products. I had fallen in love with the practice of yoga and meditation, and started to experiment with using pure essential oils to help guide my senses. After many months of investigation, I began to share these oils with my students and other yogis. Thus, I decided to create sprays specifically for the practice and for the general wellness of the mind and body.
Hopping on the train at Penn Station, I made my way to my parents’ small lake house in Massachusetts. Before even stepping inside the house, I went to the dock and dangled my feet in the water. I was there. All of me. No part of me left in New York. I instantly felt ease.
At the lake, I would wake up in the morning and hear children playing in the water and boats going by, and I would smile because I could watch all of this joy from the sofa. While hearing all these sounds of summer, I could also breath in the fresh lake air, among a few other scents. I had all of my oils set up on the kitchen table; scents of lavender, geranium, rose, peppermint, bergamot, eucalyptus, and sweet orange filled the small house and brought pure bliss along with them. I was in heaven.
I began making oil recipes for my very own sprays, creating combinations of these different oils to encourage the mind and body to open and release. I had all of the ingredients laid out on the table and began filling each bottle with love and intention. I would create for a while, spray the room with whatever I was making, and just sit there, watching the water, reflecting on the oils and my state of being.
After a full day of creating these sprays, I realized how happy I was to be working with the amazing gifts Mother Earth has given us. The next step was hard – what would be my business’s name? I knew exactly what I wanted to say, but I just couldn’t find my voice. I had been working on a name for months, and finally, suddenly, it hit me like a bee sting. The name was so obvious: Earth Prana.
After about a month of being on the lake, it was time to return to NYC. I was reserved about returning since I had such a refreshing time at the lake; it was hard to imagine going back to the concrete city. On my return journey, I made a promise to myself: to reflect more often on my everyday life and to remember that even in a place like New York City, I could still reap the benefits of Mother Earth in my small apartment. Using my sprays, I can completely find the sense of openness and release I discovered on the lake, even in the toughest moments. It is so important to take a moment for yourself, and to meet yourself exactly where you are.
I am very happy to announce that Earth Prana is fully up and running!
